About FMSI and FMS
The Friction Materials Standards Institute was founded in 1948 as a trade association of participants in the automotive aftermarket friction business. This included both brakes and clutch facings for on-highway vehicles used in North America.

There are two objectives of the Friction Materials Standards Institute:
  • To develop, maintain, and promulgate for use by its members and their customers a standardized part numbering system for brake friction, backing plates, drum shoes, and clutch facings used in on-highway automotive and heavy duty vehicle applications.
  • To disseminate to its members such scientific, engineering, technological, statistical and other relevant information as it may obtain in the public domain pertaining to brake linings, clutch facings, and the said industry.
Membership in FMSI is open to any manufacturer of friction and related products covered by the trademarked FMSI and FMS part numbers. Other participants in this industry may be eligible for licensee membership.

Full members and their customers have the right to utilize the FMSI and FMS part numbers in the United States and Canada. Non-members and their customers may not utilize these part numbers anywhere.

Both FMSI® and FMS® are registered trademarks of the Friction Materials Standards Institute.
